so how crazy of an idea would it be to transplant the PSU to the x0xb0x so it can run off DC

that is totally within reason, although i think for the x0xb0x there would be easier ways to do it. the PSU for the x0x-heart uses an SMT switching power regulator. they make through-hole versions which cost a bit more, but could be assembled as a kit. i think ada's mintyboost kit could probably be hacked to do it.
